L’aérodrome
de Haren-Evere Métamorphoses d’un haut lieu de l’aviation belge Texte de Sven Soupart |
Avec l’appui de nombreuses photographies, ce livre évoque les premiers éveloppements de l’aviation civile et militaire en Belgique depuis l’installation d’infrastructures aériennes par l’occupant dès 1914 sur la plaine de Haren-Evere, au Nord-Ouest de Bruxelles, jusqu’au moment où la Sabena la quitte au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
L’histoire de cet aérodrome croise les grands moments de l’aviation belge : implantation d’un hangar à zeppelin, création de sociétés d’aviation comme la Sabca et la Sabena, raid d’Edmond Thieffry vers l’Afrique.
Le livre met en relief son développement, dont les différentes phases de construction reflètent les défis posés par l’évolution de l’aéronautique. Il est le fruit de la consultation d’archives exceptionnelles et d’une étude patrimoniale qui a permis de dégager les traits architecturaux des deux principales constructions de l’aérogare : le bâtiment d’exploitation de la Sabena et l’aérogare proprement dite, devenus ensuite respectivement l’Avia-Palace et le quartier général du commandement tactique de la Force Aérienne belge. Sur ces bases, l’auteur compare ces bâtiments à d’autres constructions de fonction similaire, en Belgique ou à l’étranger.
Ce livre accompagnera deux expositions qui se dérouleront au Musée royal de l'armée et d'histoire militaire à Bruxelles dans le cadre du centenaire de l'aviation en Belgique.
L'auteur
Sven Soupart est licencié en histoire de l’Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Officier d’Aviation, il a travaillé au Musée royal de l’Armée et d’Histoire militaire (MRA). Détaché par la Défense à l’ULB, il a collaboré avec les Archives de la Ville de Bruxelles (AVB) à l’exposition BRUXELLES 14 – 18 Au jour le jour, une ville en guerre. Il a notamment publié La Belgique et la Première Guerre mondiale (avec Pierre-Alain Tallier, MRA), Le journal de guerre de Paul Max (avec Benoît Majerus, AVB).
Ce livre a été réalisé grâce au soutien du Ministère de la Défense.

Voorstelling
Aan de hand van talrijke foto’s evoceert dit boek de prille ontwikkeling
van de civiele en militaire luchtvaart in België sinds de installatie
van de luchtvaartinfrastructuur door de bezetter in 1914 op de vlakte
van Haren-Evere, ten noord-westen van Brussel, tot op het moment dat Sabena
kort na de Tweede Wereldoorlog Haren-Evere verlaat.
De geschiedenis van het vliegveld van Haren-Evere overlapt met de grote
momenten van de Belgische luchtvaart : de bouw van een zeppelinhangar,
het ontstaan van luchtvaartmaatschappijen zoals Sabca en Sabena, de raid
van Edmond Thieffry naar Afrika.
Het boek plaatst de ontwikkeling van de luchthaven op de voorgrond waarvan
de verschillende bouwfases de uitdagingen weerspiegelen waarmee de luchtvaart
geconfronteerd werd.
Het boek is het resultaat van het onderzoek in de verschillende archieven,
waaronder deze van het Koninklijk Legermuseum en Sabena. Het boek behandelt
eveneens de patrimoniale studie die door Defensie besteld werd om de patrimoniale
waarde van de gebouwen van de eerste internationale Belgische luchthaven
naar waarde te schatten. Deze patrimoniale studie heeft de architecturale
kenmerken blootgelegd van de twee belangrijkste gebouwen van de luchthaven
: het bedrijfsgebouw van Sabena en de terminal, die vervolgens respectievelijk
een nieuwe functie kregen als Avia-Palace en hoofdkwartier van de tactische
commandopost van de Belgische luchtmacht. Op basis hiervan vergelijkt
Sven Soupart de gebouwen met andere gelijkaardige binnen- en buitenlandse
constructies.
Het boek begeleidt twee tentoonstellingen die plaatsvinden in het Koninklijk
Legermuseum in Brussel ter
gelegenheid van de het honderdjarig bestaan van de luchtvaart in België.
De auteur
Sven Soupart behaalde zijn Licentiaat Geschiedenis aan de Université
Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Als luchtvaartofficier was hij verbonden aan
het Koninklijk Legermuseum (KLM), en als gedetacheerde van Defensie aan
de ULB heeft hij samengewerkt met het Archief van de Stad Brussel (ASB)
aan de tentoonstelling BRUSSEL 14-18 Een stad in oorlog, dag na dag. Hij
publiceerde ondermeer België en de Eerste Wereldoorlog (met Pierre-Alain
Tallier, KLM) en Le journal de guerre de Paul Max (met Benoit Majerus,
ASB).
Dit boek werd mogelijk gemaakt dankzij de steun van de Defensie.

Haren-Evere airfield Metamorphoses of a Landmark in Belgian Aviation History Text by Sven Soupart |
With the support of many photographs, this book evokes the first developments of the civil and military aviation in Belgium from the installation of the air infrastructures by the occupant in 1914 on the plain of Haren-Evere, in the North-West of Brussels, to the moment when Sabena leaves it the shortly after the Second world war.
The history of this airfield crosses the major moments of Belgian aviation: the establishment of a hangar for zeppelin, the creation of companies of aviation like Sabca and Sabena or the raid of Edmond Thieffry towards Africa.
The book highlights its development, whose various phases of construction reflect the challenges posed by the evolution of aeronautics. It is the fruit of the consultation of exceptional files and a patrimonial study which made possible to release the architectural features of two principal constructions of the air terminal: the main exploitation building of Sabena and the air terminal itself, become then respectively the Avia-Palace hotel and the general headquarter of the tactical command of the Belgian Air force. On these bases, the author compares these buildings with other constructions of similar function, in Belgium or abroad.
This book will accompany two exhibitions which will proceed with the royal Museum of Army and military History in Brussels within the framework of the centenary of aviation in Belgium.
