The fabled island of Atlantis has haunted many legendary tales ever since it vanished, within one day and one night, some 9.000 years before of Christ.
Léon Krier borrowed the mythical name for his project advised: he recreated an ideal town on the steep hills of an oceanic island, a town of art and culture, inspired by the most perfect models of Ancient Greece and the finest examples in the foundation of historic cities.
Atlantis is rather like a vast academy stretched over five hectares. It will host exhibitions, meetings, study courses, performances, amidst all the activities connected with the life of an artistscolony, a gathering of scientists, thinkers, patrons, and students living together for a while, working, searching, debating and taking part in the revitalization of ecological, cultural and aesthetic values, the richest and most threatened values of contemporary civilization.
Behind this vast program are Helga and Hans-Jürgen Müller, and Peter Klöss, who got together in 1985 with the idea of bringing to life an utopian dream, of finding a place where they could reconquer the humanistic values that transform individuals into citizens.
By entrusting Léon Krier with the project, they chose to transcend the program and create an authentic, classical urban uvre. Instead of the model of the cultural macro-machine, with its frenetic self-culturalization, Krier has conceived a traditional town, complex and hierarchical, picturesque and in perfect harmony with the islands natural site.
